DISCOVER FORMENTERA THROUGH DATA
Before you start!
Discovering Formentera through data with Power BI is a new experience.
The visions have been created from the data that each area and department of the Consell Insular de Formentera has provided to the Data Observatory. Other sections of the visions have been developed and created from new study, research, and analysis projects carried out within the Observatory.
The Observatory has processed and analyzed this data to enhance its value and knowledge, so that Microsoft Power BI can read it; and at the same time, graphically and concisely create informative and dynamic data panels with which any interested user can interact on-site without needing a Power BI account.
Before you start exploring on your own and discovering the island of Formentera through its visions, it is important to have the following guide at hand, which will allow you to interact with the data of the different visions easily and simply.
The guide:
Each of Formentera’s visions contains a certain number of panels with dynamic data and graphics. To facilitate data visualization, the presented panels follow a specific structure and design.
Each data panel contains:
• a summary table,
• an evolutionary bar chart,
• a pie or donut chart
• and filters, which are very useful because they allow and serve to visualize specific, detailed data and make comparisons.
• Each panel also has a text box presenting the data and graphics displayed.
That the data panels are dynamic means they have the ability to interact with the user. And the best way to understand it is to give an example:
On the website, once you click on the visions section, you will see all available visions.
Imagine you are interested in a demographic query (you want to know the population living in Formentera), so you will click on the sociodemographic vision, and within it, other possible buttons/tabs will appear.
You will need to choose the tab or panel titled “Population by age group, gender, and nucleus,” and you will be able to see how the population living in Formentera is distributed by different age groups (under 16, 16-64, and 65 or more years) and gender (M: men, F: women) between 2011 and 2019.
You can filter the data by year, nucleus, or dispersed population… if you click one or several filter options, you will see how the entire data panel changes and the specific information you selected will appear. In this specific case, the change will occur in the data table and on the map. Regarding the rest of the panels, whether they are maps, bar charts, pie or donut charts, and tables, changes will also occur.
Another clarification is that as you move over the panel, and in this specific case, one that contains a map, if you hover over one of the colored bubbles on the map, it returns the specific information it contains; and, if you click it, it also has the ability to modify the table by returning the information contained in the bubble. The same will happen with the rest of the panels, regardless of the visualization chart type.
And that concludes the practical guide; now it’s just a matter of practicing and discovering Formentera through its visions. And, if you have any questions or queries, you can contact us directly via the following email address: info@observatorideformentera.cat
