Synthetic Environmental Index (SEI)

THE SYNTHETIC ENVIRONMENTAL INDEX is a multidimensional indicator that groups various environmental data into a single numerical score. It allows for assessing whether the islands' economic growth is truly compatible with the preservation of the environment. The index is constructed by analyzing four critical blocks for the island reality: Water Resources: Status of aquifers, water consumption, and efficiency in water cycle management. Waste: Waste generation per capita, recycling rate, and urban waste management. Energy: Total energy consumption, dependence on fossil fuels, and penetration of renewable energies. Emissions: Greenhouse gas emissions (equivalent) and air quality. The implementation of this index seeks to fulfill three main functions: Monitoring: Providing an updated "X-ray" of the impact of human and tourist activity. Decision-making: Serving as a guide for public policies based on scientific evidence and real data. Transparency: Making it easier for civil society and businesses to know the weak points of the Balearic system. Source: Economic and Social Council of the Balearic Islands (CES).
